TIRASPOL (Tiraspol Times) - Tiraspol, the capital of Pridnestrovie, already has its own flag and its own coat of arms. But it never had an anthem - at least not until today, when members of the City Council chose the winning song and declared "Glory, Our City" to be Tiraspol's new song.

In February the mayor of Tiraspol announced a competition for an anthem, and several local citizens starting putting words to music.

The winner, "Glory, Our City", is composed by Tiraspol resident Vyacheslav Gordzey with lyrics by Alla Melnichuk. The local marching band is already practicing it and will be playing it in the streets of Tiraspol on 14 October 2007 when the city celebrates its 215th anniversary.

Tiraspol was founded in 1792 by Russian general Alexander Suvorov. It has been part of Russia ever since. From 1924 to 1940, Pridnestrovie was an autonomous republic within the Soviet Union. This republic had Tiraspol as its capital. In 1940 Moldova (previously a part of Romania) was added to the Soviet Union. When Moldova - a latecomer to the Soviet Union, in 1940 - declared independence in 1991 it attempted to take Pridnestrovie with it, but Pridnestrovie had already declared independence one year earlier, in 1990, and refused to join Moldova since it was never traditionally or historically Moldovan land.

Unlike Moldova, which has a Romanian/Moldovan majority, the majority of the population in Pridnestrovie are of Slavic ethnicity. The city of Tiraspol itself is more than 80% Slav and just 12% Moldovan.

Glory, Our City
Music: Vyacheslav Gordzey
Lyrics: Alla Melnichuk

Under the big sky, under the shining sun
Stretches the city, which blooms as a garden!
Above the clean sound of the Dniester,
Church bells freely ring out.

In this abundant land, beautiful, curved
We wove the fabric of our fates,
From the first dawn to the last sunset,
You are with us, Tiraspol, forever our home!

Glory, capital of the land of Pridnestrovie,
Created with peaceful hard work!
City of accomplishments and heroic fates,
Our homeland, the dwelling of our forefathers.

An advance border post under Suvorov's flag,
Was built as the gate to a great country,
The good deeds and the military courage,
Ensured reliable protection of the land of the Slavs.

The pattern of your streets of laid in shades,
As the lines of life in the palms of fate,
By human tasks and by Godly deeds,
Was built history's bright legend.

Glory, capital of the land of Pridnestrovie,
Created with peaceful hard work!
City of accomplishments and heroic fates,
Our homeland, the dwelling of our forefathers.
